When bad things happen to good people...

Imagine for a moment that it’s Friday evening and, after a long and arduous week at the customer’s, you’re about to shut your computer down and go home.
You feel tired and are really looking forward to the start of the weekend. Suddenly, the phone on your desk starts to ring.
You sigh internally as you reach for the phone…

On the other end is one of the client’s business analysts; a friendly guy, good natured and fun to work with.

What’s going on?

It turns out he had just spend the entire day writing a long and complex query to report some important information to his supervisors. The report is due by the end of the day and, just before his query was finished, his PC crashed.
Did he save the query?

What do you do?

You could just say “Well, I guess you’ll have to start over” and go home. Or you could go above and beyond the call of duty and use all you technical expertise to help him out. You could get as much info from the analyst as possible (“What tables did you query?” “When did you run the query?” …) and use this infor to dive into sys.dm_exec_query_stats, sys.dm_exec_cached_plans and sys.dm_exec_sql_text in the hope of retrieving the query.

So, the question is “What sort of person are you?”

The technical skills can be taught but the willingness and motivation to always give your best, to go the extra mile when required,… That’s just part of your personality. That day I went home an hour later than planned. The business analyst was relieved to have his query back and his supervisors got the data on time. Another job well done!

Are you also made of the right stuff?

If so then head over to our job site. We’re still looking for motivated employees…
